John has been working in the field of medical devices for over 20 years. He is a recognised expert in his field of medical devices management. He has been instrumental in changing the device management processes of many NHS Trusts and has a proven track record in delivering safe recurrent cost saving improvements that also improve the NHSLA targets. His knowledge of medical devices includes general biomedical, X-ray and pathology. He believes in sharing best practice and is a respected professional in his field, speaking at many professional seminars.

John has been chairman of the medical devices website www.ebme.co.uk since 1999. He has spoken on radio and appeared on television representing the medical engineering viewpoint and acting as an expert in his field. John has had over 100 educational articles published. He has been published in the Open University Science review, Engineering Technology Journal (IET), plus various other newspapers, procurement and scientific publications and the EBME website www.ebme.co.uk. He is keen to share his knowledge and raise the profile of medical devices management.

Professor Nick Bosanquet

Professor of Health Policy, Imperial College, London

Nick Bosanquet is Professor of Health Policy, Imperial College. He is also consultant Director for the think tank Reform where he is recently developed a report on forecasts of NHS funding, "The NHS in 2010: Reform or Bust".
He is also a Special Advisor on public expenditure to the Commons Health Committee and a member of DH Advisory Group on New Cancer Strategy. He has many book publications and

Wayne Moore MCMI

Wayne has worked in the medical device industry for over 20 years. Initially trained as a Biomedical Technician in the Royal Air Force, in which he served for 12 years, he has since set up and managed service departments for some of the key companies in the industry. He is now developing the Integrated Care Service offering for TBS GB.

Wayne knows that Integrated Care Services will help to enable the NHS to continue to provide world leading condition management and care pathways. He is keen to promote best practise when it comes to medical device maintenance and management and is a believer in technological advancement to enhance these outcomes. Trained in Health and Safety Management and Continuous Improvement techniques, Wayne sees both as important tools for the modern EBME Manager.

Justin McCarthy BSc MSc CEng FIET FIPEM
Consultant Clinical Engineer

Justin McCarthy graduated in 1968 with a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and has over 40 years experience as a Clinical Engineer, mostly in the NHS. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the IET and of IPEM. During his career he has contributed to the field of healthcare technology management and safety through publications, presentations, work on Standards, professional working groups and university lecturing. He has served as a member of a number of Department of Health, IPEM and IEE/IET working groups and technical committees. He has acted as an expert for the NHS Confederation at a European Commission policy conference.

He chairs the BSI CH/62 committee (Electrical Equipment in Medical Practice) and the IEC SC62A committee, which has the responsibility for the development of the IEC 60601-1 standard. He is a UK nominee to IEC SC62A/PT62353 which is responsible for the IEC 62353 standard (Recurrent tests and test after repair of medical electrical equipment).

Paul Musto

Paul has more than 34 years of experience working with Endoscopes. After leaving school Paul started employment with Olympus (also known as KeyMed in the UK) in 1978. During his 30 years’ service within Olympus KeyMed’s Endoscope Technical Division, Paul worked his way through the ranks to a senior position within the company. This career journey included hands on experience from quality assurance inspection, technical repair, to workshop divisional management. This length of service has allowed Paul to gain a valuable understanding of Endoscope history in addition to his technical knowledge of scope construction and functionality.

Paul joined TBS GB in January 2009. His position as an Endoscope Specialist has allowed him to make full use of his experience working closely with Endoscopy Units and those responsible for management of Endoscope maintenance. Paul also has a clear understanding of customers’ needs leaving him well placed to provide advice and assistance for important decisions that need to be made within the Endoscopy maintenance business. Paul will be available at the TBS GB stand for any further questions.

Jacob Castiel

Jacob started his medical career as a chief paramedic instructor the Israeli national EMS organization (Red shield of David). During his 15 years of work at “Magen David Adom”, Jacob performed various clinical and educational management positions and certified in several international courses in clinical education (AHA, ERC certified Senior ALS instructor) and has had the opportunity to train numerous clinicians all over Europe. As to date, Jacob continues to volunteer as a Paramedic in the MICU and the A&E units of the Israeli national ambulance service “Magen David Adom”.

In the past several years, Jacob has moved into the medical device industry as a part of the innovative Oridion Capnography company, and lead the Capnography education programs in Europe. Currently, after the acquisition of Oridion by the global leading medical device company Covidien, Jacob now leads the Mechanical Ventilation and Capnography training all over the European market.

Joe Emmerson
Core Clinical Services Business Manager, Head of Medical Device Management

Joe began his career in 1990 as an apprentice electronics engineer in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He spent a varied 13 year career in the forces before leaving to become a biomedical engineering technical trainer for Capital Medical. For the past 9 years Joe has been employed by University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust, the first six years being as a site manager for Royal Lancaster infirmary and the latter 3 as the Head of Medical Devices Management with corporate responsibility for all 5 sites.

Within his organisation Joe is the nominated lead and advisor to the Trust for CQC outcome 11 and NHSLA 5.4/5.5 for Medical Devices but also his role involves a wider business management support to the Divisional General Manager and associated services.

Joe has a passion for Medical Device Management with particular focus on lean systems of work, operational processes and developing or specifying automated systems to support operational effectiveness. Joe has worked closely with his EBME staff and database suppliers to continue to push development in true Medical Device Management systems.
